A Place to Belong

I’ve been thinking about belonging lately.

Not necessarily about being included.

Or being invited.

Or even being surrounded by people who love you.

But about the feeling of belonging.

Because I’ve realized those things aren’t always the same.

You can be welcomed into a room and still feel strangely out of place.

You can be surrounded by familiar faces and still feel a little lonely.

Not because anyone has done something wrong.

But because belonging seems to reach somewhere deeper than simply being present.

I think we all want to know there’s a place for us.

Not a place we have to earn.

Not one where we have to become someone different to fit.

Just somewhere we can arrive as we are and know that our presence matters.

And maybe that’s part of what makes God’s love so extraordinary.

He doesn’t merely make room for us.

He calls us His own.

But I’ve also been realizing that knowing we belong to God doesn’t necessarily take away our longing to belong somewhere here, too.

We were created for connection.

For friendship.

For community.

For the kind of relationships where being wanted isn’t something we have to wonder about.

And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with longing for that.

Maybe faith doesn’t always take away the ache of what we’re missing.

But it reminds us that even in the moments when we feel out of place in this world, we are never without a place in His.

And perhaps, while we’re still finding where we belong here, there’s comfort in remembering that with Him…

we already do.

“Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household.”

— Ephesians 2:19 (NIV)
